The Double Mystery Of The Cross
“Behold your king!” Pilate said to the Jews.
“Crucify Him!” the Jews shouted.
“Shall I crucify your King?” Pilate asks.
“We have no king but Caesar!” answers the Jews.
When reaching the “Place of a Skull,” which in Hebrew is called, “Golgotha:”
There they crucified Jesus, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the midst.
Pilate writes a title and puts it on the Cross:
“Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews,” in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. [Clip]
[“The chief priests said to Pilate, ‘Do not write The King Of The Jews, but rather, This man said I am the King Of The Jews.’ “What I have written stays written.”]
The double mystery of the Cross is before us…as St Paul says:
“The world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”
The first mystery of the Cross is to refuse the world, as in:
“The world is crucified unto me.”
This means refusing the enticements, praises, and honors of the world.
The second mystery of the Cross is to refuse our own ‘worldliness,’ as in:
“I am crucified unto the world.”
This means refusing our own attachments and inner worldly desires.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Know ye not that friendship of the world is enmity with God?
